Hiking Trails in Holbrook Island Sanctuary

One of the best ways to see the coast is by walking alongside it. Holbrook Island Sanctuary has a few different hikes that can suit almost anybody.

Goose Falls Trail

Distance: 0.9 miles

Difficulty: Easy

Goose Falls is one of the most popular hikes in Holbrook Island, and it makes sense why. It’s a perfect birding spot for finding waterfowl and forest-dwelling birds in the nearby trees, offers a fun sunset shoreline walk for couples, and is relatively easy for all ages. Cross-country skiers even flock here in the winter. The Goose Falls are also pretty.

Tom Cod Cove Trail

Distance: 1 mile

Difficulty: Easy

Unfortunately for the Tom Cod Trail, it gets mixed up with Goose Falls a lot, so some guests dislike this one because they didn’t see the waterfalls they were expecting to.

So what will you see on this trail? An old cemetery for past Americans, the beautiful islands in the Penobscot Bay, and plenty of waterfowl. It’s a quick and pleasant hike.

Fresh Pond Trail

Distance: 3 miles

Difficulty: Easy

This is a quiet wooded trail that will feel more typical of a mainland hike. You’ll wander through the woods until you get to the aforementioned Fresh Pond itself. It’s an easy hike that offers you a chance to see birds and mammals of every shape and size.

Backwoods Trail

Distance: 2 miles

Difficulty: Moderate

As the hardest trail in the park, the Backwood Mountain Trail offers a great look at the forest from the summit of Backwood Mountain. While it starts relatively easy and inoffensive to most hikers, the last half mile transforms into a steep incline.

Beaches of Cape Rosier

Cape Rosier’s south shore has some excellent beaches for guests just looking to lay out in the sun. Bakeman Beach and Redman Beach are both comfortable beaches that allow you to shore fish, play in the sand, or sit back, relax, and get a tan.

If you’re interested in fishing, you should look into buying a Maine fishing license so you are permitted and ready. You can do so by clicking the button right here. We hope you get the catch of your dreams.

The Good Life Center

Address: 372 Harborside Rd, Harborside, ME

A historical farm previously owned by famous environmentalists Helen and Scott Nearing, The Good Life Center is all about sustainable living. You’ll see hand-built yurts made on-site, organic gardens, and learn how you can become more energy efficient and live sustainably at home.
